Staying in Shanag & Bahang, North of Manali

Persimmon Farmstead Shanag sits near Bahang, about 4-5km north of Manali on the road toward Old Manali and Solang. Our newest home has chalets and stone cottages on orchard lawns, at roughly 2,050m. It suits guests who want quick reach to Old Manali cafes and mountain drives, with farm quiet at night.

Bahang is the last proper village before the road climbs to Solang and Rohtang. It's a short drive north of the Mall Road crush — close enough that you can be in an Old Manali cafe in ten to fifteen minutes, far enough that your evenings are apple trees and the sound of the Beas rather than car horns.

Our Shanag home is the newer of our two farmsteads. We opened it after four years of hosting at our Badgran house, taking what guests kept asking for — more space to spread out, room for the dog, a lawn the kids could actually run on — and building it into orchard land on this side of town.

The layout is chalets and stone cottages set across the lawns rather than rooms along a corridor. You get your own front step, apple and pear trees close enough to touch, and the same food-first kitchen we're known for. Below is who this side of Manali tends to suit, and how to think about it against our Badgran home.

Minutes from Old Manali

Ten to fifteen minutes by car to the Old Manali cafe strip and the Manu temple, so late breakfasts and evening dinners out are easy without a long drive back in the dark.

On the Solang & Rohtang road

Bahang is your launch point north. Solang Valley is roughly a 20-25 minute drive up; the Atal Tunnel and Sissu sit beyond that for a full day out to Lahaul.

Chalets & stone cottages

Standalone spaces on orchard lawns, not corridor rooms. Your own entrance, trees at the doorstep, and quiet at night once the day-trippers have gone back down.

Same food, pet-friendly

The kitchen carries over from Badgran — unhurried home cooking, mountain produce. Dogs are welcome here as they are at both our homes, with lawn space to match.

Where Shanag and Bahang actually are

From the main Manali bus stand, head north past the log huts toward Old Manali and keep going. Bahang village comes up at around 4-5km, roughly a 12-15 minute drive depending on the season's traffic. Shanag is the stretch just above it as the valley narrows toward Solang. You're at about 2,050m here — a touch higher than Manali town, so mornings are crisp and the apple trees leaf and fruit a little later than they do further down the valley.

This is the busy northern approach in peak months. The upside is everything mountain-facing sits on your doorstep: Solang, the Atal Tunnel, Sethan and Hamta trails, the road to Lahaul. The trade-off is that the Bahang-Solang road carries day-trip traffic on summer weekends, so we point guests to early starts.

Who this side suits

Shanag works best for guests who came to Manali to move around — Solang mornings, a day up to Sissu through the tunnel, evenings in Old Manali. Couples who want cafe-hopping without a taxi each way do well here. So do families and groups who want the standalone cottage layout and a lawn, and anyone travelling with a dog who wants outdoor room.

If your idea of the trip is mostly staying put — reading on the lawn, long lunches, minimal driving — our Badgran home 14km south is the quieter, more away-from-it-all choice. Neither is wrong; it comes down to whether you want to be near the mountain action or settled below it.

Getting up and out from here

  • Old Manali cafes & Manu Temple: 10-15 min by car
  • Solang Valley: 20-25 min up the valley road
  • Atal Tunnel (north portal): about 45 min; Sissu in Lahaul roughly 1-1.5 hrs
  • Hamta Pass / Sethan trailheads: reachable as day starts from here
  • Manali Mall Road & bus stand: 12-15 min back down

Seasons at Bahang

April to June is the reliable window — clear days, apple and pear blossom giving way to green, and the Solang road fully open. July and August bring the monsoon; it's greener and quieter, with the odd landslip day on the higher roads. October brings the apple harvest and cold, bright mornings. December to February is snow season up here: the higher road can close, but a fresh fall over the orchard is the reason some guests come at all.

The food, which is the point

We're a food-first farmstead before anything else, and that doesn't change between homes. Meals are cooked to order and unhurried — Himachali dhaam-style plates, whatever's good from the valley that week, proper breakfasts before a mountain day. Tell us your timings and dietary needs when you book and we'll plan around them rather than run a fixed buffet.

How booking works

We take bookings as a request over WhatsApp rather than through an instant online checkout. Message us with your dates, how many of you there are, and whether a dog is coming, and we'll confirm what's free across our chalets and cottages and talk you through the specifics. It's a short conversation, and it means we've actually planned for you before you arrive.

Questions

Good to know

How far is Persimmon Farmstead Shanag from Old Manali?

About 10-15 minutes by car. Bahang sits 4-5km north of Manali on the road toward Old Manali and Solang, so the cafe strip and Manu temple are a short drive rather than a full outing.

Is Shanag or your Badgran home better for us?

Shanag suits guests who want to be near Solang, Old Manali and the Lahaul road with easy cafe access. Badgran, 14km south, is quieter and more settled for those who mainly want to stay on the farmstead. Both share the same kitchen and welcome dogs.

Can I reach Solang and the Atal Tunnel easily from here?

Yes — that's the main reason to stay this side. Solang is roughly 20-25 minutes up the valley, and the Atal Tunnel is about 45 minutes on, with Sissu in Lahaul beyond it for a full day out.

Do you have room prices online?

We don't publish prices or take online payment. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and party size and we'll confirm availability across the chalets and cottages and share the details directly.
