New Year in Manali, spent in the orchard instead of the crowd

For a quieter New Year near Manali, our orchard farmstays sit away from the Mall Road crush: Persimmon Farmstead at 14 Mile (~14km south) and Shanag (~4-5km north). Expect bonfire nights, home-cooked food and possible snow. Book weeks ahead over WhatsApp, as late December fills first.

New Year is the week Manali town gets loudest. Mall Road turns into a slow shuffle, the highway backs up past the bus stand, and 31st December on the strip is a proper crowd. If that is your kind of night, brilliant. If you would rather see the year in with a bonfire, hot food and the quiet of an orchard, that is what we do.

We run two family homes near Manali, both a little out of the fray. Persimmon Farmstead at 14 Mile, Badgran sits about 14km south of town on the Kullu-Manali highway. Persimmon Farmstead Shanag, near Bahang, is 4-5km north toward Old Manali and Solang, closer to the snow line and the walks. You are near enough to dip into town, far enough to sleep in silence.

We have hosted New Years here since 2021, and the pattern is always the same: these dates fill first. This page is the honest version of what to expect, and how to get a room before they go.

Away from the Mall Road crush

14 Mile sits ~14km south of Manali, Shanag 4-5km north. You reach town in about half an hour when you want it, and skip the 31st-night gridlock when you don't.

Bonfire nights, home-cooked food

On New Year's Eve we light the orchard bonfire and keep dinner coming from our kitchen. No cover charge, no DJ, just a warm small-group evening past midnight.

A real snow chance, told honestly

New Year snow happens some years but isn't guaranteed; the heavy falls come in Jan and Feb. Shanag sits higher for a better chance. Expect frost and sub-zero nights regardless.

Why New Year here feels different from Mall Road

Late December turns Manali town into slow-moving traffic. The stretch from the bus stand up to Mall Road can take an hour to crawl, parking near Circuit House disappears by mid-morning, and the crowd on 31st night is shoulder-to-shoulder. It is fun for some. For a lot of our guests, it is the thing they came to the mountains to get away from.

Both our homes sit off that madness. At 14 Mile, Badgran, we are on the Kullu-Manali highway about 14km south of town, so you can dip into Manali when you want and be back in the orchard within half an hour. Shanag, near Bahang, is 4-5km north toward Old Manali and the Solang road, closer to the snow line and the walks. Neither puts you in the New Year's Eve gridlock unless you choose to go looking for it.

Bonfire nights and how we do 31st December

On New Year's Eve we light a bonfire in the orchard and keep it going late. There is no ticketed party, no DJ, no cover charge. It is dinner from our kitchen, hot food coming out in rounds, blankets, and the fire. Families sit with kids until they fade; couples and small groups usually stay up past midnight. If you want loud club nights, town has them; we are the other kind of evening.

Because it is a working farmstead and not an event venue, numbers stay small. That is deliberate. Tell us on WhatsApp how your group looks and what you are hoping for, and we will be honest about whether that particular night suits you.

Snow chances at New Year, told straight

Here is the honest version: snow at New Year is a real chance, not a promise. Manali town (~2,050m) gets its heavier falls more reliably in January and February. Late December snow does happen, and when it does it is lovely, but plenty of years the 31st is cold, clear and frosty rather than white.

  • For a stronger snow chance, Shanag sits higher and closer to the Solang/Rohtang side than the town or 14 Mile.
  • Solang Valley (~2,560m) and the road up usually hold snow earlier and longer than the valley floor.
  • Even without fresh snow, expect frost, single-digit and often sub-zero nights, and clear crisp mornings.
  • Carry proper layers, gloves and grippy shoes. Roads can ice over at night; drive daytime hours where you can.

Book well ahead, and how booking works

New Year is the one week we fill first. The last week of December is usually spoken for weeks in advance, and once a home is full for those nights, it is full. If your dates are fixed, message us early rather than hoping something opens up on 28th December.

We take bookings as a request over WhatsApp. There is no online payment gateway and no instant-confirm button. You tell us your dates, group size and which home, we confirm what is actually free, and we hold it for you. It is a small family setup, so the person replying is the person who will be there when you arrive.

Which home suits your group

  • Couples: either home works, but many couples like the quieter 14 Mile orchard for a slow, food-first few days away from the crowd.
  • Families with kids: the open orchard, pet-friendly setup and home-cooked meals make either property easy with children; tell us ages so we can advise on rooms.
  • Small groups of friends: good for a bonfire-and-food New Year rather than a party circuit; let us know your headcount early as group availability goes first.
  • Bringing a dog: both homes are pet-friendly, just mention it when you message so we can plan the space.

Food, because that is the point

We are food-first, and New Year is when the kitchen does the most work. Meals are home-cooked, seasonal and generous, served warm through cold evenings rather than off a buffet. Guests who have been with us since we started in 2021 tend to come back for the table as much as the view, and it is a big part of why the homes sit around 4.9/5. Tell us about dietary needs when you book and we will sort it.

Questions

Good to know

Will there be snow at Persimmon Farmstead for New Year?

Maybe. Snow at New Year is a genuine chance, not a guarantee; Manali's heavier falls usually come in January and February. Shanag sits higher and nearer the Solang side, so it has a better snow chance than the 14 Mile home. Either way, expect frost and sub-zero nights.

How far are your homes from Mall Road and the New Year crowds?

Our 14 Mile home is about 14km south of Manali on the highway, roughly half an hour from Mall Road; Shanag is 4-5km north toward Old Manali and Solang. Both keep you clear of the 31st-night gridlock in town while still being an easy drive in.

How do we book for New Year, and how early?

Book over WhatsApp as a request; there is no online payment or published price here. The last week of December fills first, often weeks ahead, so message us early with your dates, group size and preferred home. We will confirm what is actually free and hold it.

Do you do a New Year's Eve party?

Not a ticketed one. On 31st we light a bonfire in the orchard and serve dinner from our kitchen through the evening. It is a small, warm, family-run night rather than a DJ event. If you want club nights, Manali town has them a short drive away.
