Staying near Kullu-Bhuntar Airport: a farm one hour up the valley

Kullu-Bhuntar Airport (KUU) sits about 35km south of our Badgran farmstay, roughly a one-hour drive up the Kullu-Manali highway. We arrange airport pickup on request, and a night with us on either end of your flight saves the pre-dawn scramble. Do plan for weather-related flight changes.

Kullu-Bhuntar Airport, the little valley strip most people mean when they say they are flying to Manali, is about 35km south of our Badgran farmstead. That is roughly an hour by road, climbing gently along the Beas on the Kullu-Manali highway. It is the fastest way into the valley when the flights cooperate, and a night at the farmstead on either end of that flight takes the stress out of the timing.

We run two homes: Persimmon Farmstead at 14 Mile, Badgran, closer to the airport and the simpler airport-side base, and Persimmon Farmstead Shanag near Bahang, about 50km on and better suited to the middle of a longer stay. We arrange pickup from Bhuntar for guests who ask ahead.

One honest caveat up front: flights to KUU are weather-dependent and cancel more often than most first-time visitors expect. We will happily help you plan around that, backup route included.

About 35km, one hour

Badgran sits roughly an hour north of Kullu-Bhuntar Airport (KUU) along the Beas, on the main Kullu-Manali highway. Shanag near Bahang is about 50km and 90 minutes to two hours.

Pickup on request

Send your flight number over WhatsApp and we will have a car at the arrivals gate. We check your flight status the morning of, so weather delays do not strand you.

An easy first or last night

Fly out calm with a one-hour morning run to Bhuntar instead of a pre-dawn taxi, or land and be fed and settled at the farmstead before the light goes.

Plan for the weather

KUU turboprops cancel on low cloud even when it is not raining. Keep a buffer day and a road backup; October-November flights are the most reliable of the year.

The drive from Bhuntar to us, in plain numbers

Kullu-Bhuntar Airport, also called Kullu Airport (code KUU), sits just south of Bhuntar town where the Parvati and Beas rivers meet. From the runway gate to our Badgran farmstead at 14 Mile is roughly 35km, and in normal traffic that is about an hour on the Kullu-Manali highway. The road runs alongside the Beas the whole way, gains a little altitude as you climb toward Kullu and then Katrain, and is tarred and driveable year-round barring landslide days in peak monsoon.

Our Shanag home near Bahang is further on, about 50km from the airport, so budget closer to 90 minutes to two hours for that one depending on how thick the Manali-town traffic is when you pass through. If your flight lands late afternoon, the Badgran house is the easier first night.

Why book the airport-side night with us

KUU is a small STOL strip served by a handful of daily turboprop flights, mostly from Chandigarh and Delhi, and they run to a morning schedule dictated by mountain weather. Departures are often early. If you are flying out, spending your last night at Badgran means a calm one-hour run down to Bhuntar instead of a three-hour pre-dawn taxi from a hotel deep in Old Manali. Landing in, the reverse holds: you can be at the farmstead, fed and settled, before the afternoon light goes.

Airport pickup, arranged on request

We arrange a pickup from Bhuntar for guests who ask ahead. Send us your flight number and landing time over WhatsApp when you confirm your dates, and we will have a car waiting outside the arrivals gate. Because KUU flights get rescheduled or cancelled for cloud cover, we keep the pickup flexible and track your flight status the morning of, so a delay does not leave you stranded or a driver idling on the clock.

Plan for weather, and keep a backup

  • Flights to Bhuntar are the first thing weather affects. Low cloud over the valley cancels turboprops even when the runway itself is dry, so never make KUU your only route in or out of a fixed-date trip.
  • Keep a buffer day. If you fly in the morning and the flight scrubs, the fallback is the overnight Volvo bus from Delhi (about 12-14 hours to Manali) or a car from Chandigarh (about 8-9 hours). Both pass close to us.
  • Book flexible or refundable air tickets where you can. The airline reschedules more often in monsoon (July-August) and mid-winter (January-February) when fog and snow are in play.
  • Tell us your real plan. If your flight is cancelled we will help you sort the road alternative and hold your room.

When flying into Bhuntar makes most sense

October and November are the sweet spot: clear post-monsoon skies, the orchard turning colour, and the most reliable flight operations of the year. Late April through June is also generally good, with the odd afternoon build-up. We would be more cautious about counting on flights through the deep monsoon weeks and the snow-heavy stretch of January, when the road, ironically, is often the surer bet even if it is longer.

Getting settled once you arrive

Whichever way you come in, the first thing that happens at the farmstead is food. We are a food-first house, so a late lander gets a proper meal rather than a locked kitchen. The Badgran home is on the highway side at 14 Mile, Badgran, easy for a driver to find; Shanag is quieter and higher, better for a longer stay once you have your bearings. Both are pet-friendly, so if you have flown in with a dog, they are welcome too.
