A summer escape to Manali: cool orchard days in May and June

A summer escape to Manali (May–June) trades 40°C plains heat for orchard shade and cool mountain nights. Persimmon Farmstead's two family-run farmstays sit at roughly 1,900–2,100m near Manali, so days stay mild and evenings need a light layer. Peak season fills fast — send us a WhatsApp early to hold your dates.

Summer is when a Manali trip earns its keep. From late April the plains turn punishing, and the drive up the Kullu valley ends somewhere that actually feels different — cooler air, green orchards, and evenings you'll want a jacket for. That's the trade we offer families and couples every May and June.

We're a family-run farmstead with two orchard homes near Manali, both sitting between roughly 1,900 and 2,100m. Days stay mild, nights stay crisp, and the food — which is genuinely the point of staying with us — is at its best when the kitchen has summer produce to work with.

A quick, honest word on timing: these are our two busiest months. Rooms are limited at both homes and the good weekends go early. If a May or June trip is on your mind, the single most useful thing you can do is message us your dates now rather than later.

Below: which of our two homes suits your group, the day trips worth timing well, what to pack, and how our simple WhatsApp booking works.

Cool relief from the plains

While north India bakes at 38–42°C, days here run in the low-to-mid 20s and nights drop to 10–14°C at roughly 1,900–2,100m altitude — genuine escape, not just a change of scenery.

Orchard shade all day

By May the apple, pear and plum trees are in full leaf, so afternoons land as dappled shade. Long breakfasts and slow lunches on the orchard side are the whole idea.

Two homes, north and south

Badgran (14 Mile) sits ~14km south of Manali for quiet and easy road access; Shanag sits ~4–5km north, close to Old Manali, Solang and the Atal Tunnel.

Book early, book by WhatsApp

May and June fill fast. There's no online payment — send us your dates on WhatsApp and we'll confirm availability. The earlier you ask, the better your choice.

Why May and June are the plains-escape months

By early May, Delhi, Chandigarh and much of north India are pushing 38–42°C. Up here, that same week runs pleasant days in the low-to-mid 20s and nights that drop to 10–14°C — cool enough that you'll reach for a light jacket after dinner. Both our homes sit in orchard land where the apple, pear and plum trees are in full leaf by then, so the afternoon sun lands as dappled shade rather than glare. Guests often tell us the first thing they notice is that they've stopped sweating.

June is greener still and slightly warmer, with the occasional pre-monsoon shower that clears the air and brings the Beas down louder. It's our busiest stretch alongside the school-holiday crowd, which is exactly why we say the same thing to everyone: pick your dates, then message us. Rooms at both properties are limited, and by late April the good weekends are already spoken for.

Our two homes, and which suits a summer trip

Persimmon Farmstead at 14 Mile, Badgran sits on the Kullu–Manali highway about 14km south of Manali town. It's the quieter, more spread-out of the two — good if you want orchard walks, slow mornings and easy road access without the Old Manali crowds. Persimmon Farmstead Shanag sits near Bahang, roughly 4–5km north of Manali toward Old Manali and the Solang road, so it's closer to the trailheads, cafés and the Rohtang/Atal Tunnel run.

  • Travelling with grandparents or young children who want minimal driving and flat orchard ground to wander: Badgran (14 Mile).
  • Wanting to be near Old Manali cafés, Solang and the tunnel for day trips: Shanag.
  • Two couples or a small group splitting time: many guests book one home for the whole party — ask us and we'll tell you honestly which fits your dates.

Food first — that's the point of staying with us

We're a food-first farmstead, and summer is when the kitchen is happiest. Breakfasts run long with local apples, fresh parathas and proper coffee; dinners are home-style Himachali and North Indian, cooked to what's good that day rather than a fixed menu. Tell us about allergies, kids' plates or a vegetarian-only table when you book and we'll sort it. Eating together on the orchard side as the light goes is the part most people remember.

Day trips that work best in early summer

  • Solang Valley — about 30–40 minutes up from Shanag; open meadows and paragliding before the monsoon.
  • Atal Tunnel to Sissu — around 1.5–2 hours; the Lahaul side still holds snow on the peaks into June.
  • Old Manali and Manu Temple — cafés and short river walks, 15–20 minutes from Shanag.
  • Naggar Castle and the Roerich gallery — closer to Badgran, a relaxed half-day.
  • Jana Falls and village lunches — good for a family with older kids.

We'll help you time these around traffic. The Solang and tunnel roads get busy from mid-morning in peak season, so we usually nudge guests out early and back for a late orchard lunch.

What to pack for a Manali summer

  • Layers: t-shirts for the day, one warm layer for 10–14°C evenings.
  • A light rain shell for June's occasional afternoon shower.
  • Sun protection — the high-altitude sun is stronger than it feels.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for orchard paths and short trails.
  • Anything your dog needs — both homes are pet-friendly, just tell us in advance.

How booking works

We keep it personal. There's no online payment and no instant checkout — you send us a WhatsApp with your dates, party size and which home you're leaning toward, and we reply with what's available and how to confirm. For May and June we strongly suggest reaching out several weeks ahead; the closer you leave it, the more we're working with leftovers rather than your first choice.
